We often tell ourselves we’re “too old” to start something new—a new career, a new fitness routine, or even just a new hobby. But then you meet someone like the 59-year-old college student, and all of those excuses just melt away.

I work a few evenings a week at a community college, and the other night, I met this truly remarkable woman. She needed help with something, and as we got to talking, she shared that she’s set to graduate this May with a degree in criminal justice.

The other thing that absolutely astounded me was her determination. This hasn’t been a sprint; it’s been a marathon. It has taken her 20 years to finish this degree.

This woman is determined to get passed the finish line and get her degree. Every single Friday, this 59-year-old woman takes the bus (because she doesn’t have a car) to get to her final three classes. One is a speech class, and another is… weight training!

When I asked her what she wanted to do with her degree, she said, “Well, I feel like I’m too old to be a police officer, but I want to do something in law enforcement.”

This is the power of a resilient and youthful spirit. She’s not letting age define her limitations. She’s actively pursuing her passion and finding a way to make it happen, even when the obstacles include catching a bus every Friday.

Her story is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to try something new, to chase a dream, or to set a new goal. So, I challenge you: find someone who inspires you, someone who makes you think, “That is just amazing.” And then, remember that the same capacity for inspiration and resilience is within you, too.
