The Small House with the Big Heart: Lessons in Downsizing

I changed a lot of things last year, and one of the biggest shifts was moving into a new, smaller place. What’s been so surprising is that since I downsized, I’ve had more company than I can remember having in years.

It’s an interesting paradox—I live in a much smaller space now, yet I seem to be entertaining more than ever. Even though my home is only 740 square feet, it has worked out just fine for hosting.

I’ve been trying to figure out what changed. Maybe it’s not the square footage, but a shift in me. I’m in a different season of life now. Back in my twenties, before I had children, I loved to entertain. Then, once you have kids, your life becomes all about doing things for them. Now that my children are grown, I find myself back in a season where I am simply more open to it.

I have to tell you, I am having a absolute blast. There is something so rewarding about opening your doors and enjoying the presence of friends and family coming to visit. This new chapter has taught me that you don’t need a massive house to have a full life—you just need an open heart (and maybe a few extra chairs).
