Have you ever found yourself in that strange cycle where you are downsizing and “upsizing” at the same time?

Not too long ago, I moved into my cozy 740-square-foot apartment. I was so excited to embrace a more minimalist lifestyle in this multi-generational neighborhood. I was getting rid of things, donating boxes, and feeling lighter—or so I thought.

But then, the “necessities” started creeping in. Suddenly, I needed blackout curtains. Then I needed the rods. Then I needed shelving to organize my one-car garage. Before I knew it, I was spending more money than ever just to feel “comfortable” in my smaller space.

The Breaking Point

I looked around and realized I was exhausted. I was tired of the shopping, tired of the research, and honestly, tired of the spending. I was trying to buy my way into a simpler life, which is a contradiction if I’ve ever seen one!

That’s when I decided it had to stop. I needed a hard reset.

Starting with the Ultimate Test: December 1st

I chose December 1st as my start date for a No-Buy Year. Most people told me were encouraging and might have questioned starting at Christmas, but for me, it was the perfect time. If I could navigate the holidays and the urge to “deck the halls” with new things, I knew I could handle anything.

I made sure my kids got their Christmas gifts, but for myself? I was done.

5 Months In: What I’ve Learned

Now that I am officially five months into this journey, I can tell you that the shift in my mindset has been profound. Here are my biggest takeaways so far:

  • Discipline is a Muscle: The first month was hard, but now, the “itch” to browse online or walk through the home decor aisle is almost gone.
  • The Power of “Enough”: I’ve learned to look at my space and realize that it’s already comfortable. I don’t need a new gadget or a different curtain tie-back to make this a home.
  • Intentionality over Consumption: I’m spending my time noticing the little things—like the view from my porch or a long walk with my Maltese—rather than tracking packages.

Are you ready to pivot?

You don’t have to move to a new apartment to realize you’ve had enough. Whether it’s a “no-buy month” or a full year, I encourage you to look at your surroundings and ask: Does this add value, or am I just filling space?

Choosing “enough” is one of the most freeing decisions I’ve ever made.
